From Marine to Entrepreneur: The UPS Store Franchise Triumphs with SBDC Support
Overview
Alex Coleman, a US Marine and seasoned CPA, transitioned from his role as an auditor at a Big 4 accounting firm in Houston to pursue a new mission: opening a UPS Store Franchise in Clute, Texas. His vision encompassed offering a range of services, including shipping, mailboxes, copies, and faxes.
Upon deciding to embark on this entrepreneurial venture, Coleman sought assistance from Jennifer Finny, at the Brazosport College Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to navigate the complexities of securing funding. Finny introduced Coleman to Jeff Spoor from First State Bank in Clute, TX.
Having gained approval from The UPS Store as a franchisee, Coleman faced the challenge of securing startup funding. To kickstart the business, he needed funding for a buildout, franchise fees, inventory purchases, and working capital.
Working closely with Finny, Coleman received comprehensive support in crafting a robust business plan. This included meticulous financials and the preparation of a funding application for submission to Jeff.
Jennifer’s guidance and expertise were invaluable throughout the entire process. From thoroughly crafting a business plan to navigating the complexities of funding, her support was instrumental. The SBDC didn't just help me secure a loan; they became a trusted ally, ensuring every step was strategic and well-executed. I could not have made this happen without Jennifer’s support.

The collaboration between Coleman and the SBDC proved fruitful, resulting in the successful approval of a loan from First State Bank. In addition to securing external funding, Coleman demonstrated his commitment by investing his own capital into the venture. While the pandemic-induced supply chain challenges caused a delay in the opening timeline, Coleman persevered, and in February 2023, he officially commenced operations as The UPS Store in Clute, Texas. The business not only realized Coleman's dream but also contributed to the local economy by creating multiple full and part-time positions.
Coleman's journey from military service to entrepreneurship stands as a testament to the transformative power of strategic business planning and support from SBDC. The UPS Store in Clute is not just a business; it's a symbol of dedication, resilience, and success in the face of challenges.
“Despite pandemic-related setbacks, the SBDC’s commitment never wavered,” Coleman said. “Opening day marked not just a business milestone, but a testament to the SBDC's unwavering dedication to entrepreneurs like me. I'm not just a business owner; I'm proof that with the right support, dreams can become reality.”
